Did you know that the percentage of people that now access the internet using their phone has overtaken accessing via desktop? Mobile ownership stats show that in the UK, 97% of the population (aged 16+) own a mobile and 61% of that own a smartphone. The functionality of mobile phones has changed massively over the years, going from a device you could simply make calls from, to then being able to send text messages and now browsing the internet amongst many other functionalities.

Smartphones have been designed to make every internet related action very easy to do. We now see more people managing their emails using their phone (68% in the UK) and browsing the web the same way (66%). Whilst the figures regarding shopping via phone is relatively low at 26%, you would expect these figures to increase over the coming years as more apps get developed that make transactions so much easier.

It wouldn’t be surprising if, at some point in the not so distant future, mobile devices further dominate in terms of internet browsing because they are so convenient to use and more websites and apps will be built specifically for mobile users. So you may have noticed that many websites that you visit have been set up to adapt to different devices because businesses know that they will lose customers if their website isn’t responsive.

52% of users say that a bad mobile experience will make them less likely to engage with a company. So that could be up to half of your website visitors deciding not to do business with you due to difficulty using your site through a mobile. That is why more and more businesses are now changing over to responsive sites. The upfront costs of setting up a responsive website will soon pay for themselves in terms of increased lead generations.
